31. Dr. Horace DOUGLASS (42) (43)(51) (2) was born in 1808 in Richmond, Chittenden County, Vermont. (56)(57) One source had him born abt 1809 in Morristown, Lamoille County, Vermont. He died on 4 Mar 1882 in Kern Island, Kern County, California. (58)(59) (60) He has Ancestral File number 1SJ7-HFK. He has Ancestral File number 1PKK-MSS. Horace Douglass was born in Richmond, Chittendon County, Vermont as the third son and fifth child of Richard and Rhoda(Clawson) Douglas. His family had moved to Kalamazoo, Michigan by the time he was two years old where four more brothers were born.

He had moved back to Vermont by 1834 where he married Fanny Cook and was listed in the 1840 Vermont Census as living in Morriston, Lamoille County, Vermont, now Morrisville, which was where Fanny was born.
The 1840 Census listed head of household between 30-40, Horace was 32, one female between 20-30, Fanny was 28, and one female under 5. He may have had a daughter at that time or the census may have listed the child as female in error as his son William was born in 1834 and would have been about five.

Old letters in the Garner family stated Dr. Douglass lived near Rutland, Vermont during his first marriage and it was there he attended medical college. Dr. Douglass held a degree in medicine obtained 10 June 1840 from the Vermont Medical College at Woodstock, Vermont near Rutland.

He was living in Cambridge, Washington County, New York in 1854 when on November 2 he married Mrs. Mary Jane Wells and still in 1865 when their daughter Kittie was born. Their son Elmer was born in 1861. Mary Jane Burt had previously been married to Lewis B. Wells and brought their children Bernard, born 1849 and Emma, born 1845 to live with them.

He had moved to Caldwell County, Missouri in 1875 according to a letter to his daughter Kittie in Vassar, Michigan from Flag Springs, Missouri dated 15 February 1875 and was practicing medicine there. Flag Springs is about 20 miles north and east of St. Joseph, Missouri.

He was approved by the California Board of Medical Examiners to practice medicine and surgery in the state of California 13 October 1877. His Medical certificate was recorded in the Office of the Clerk from Kern County, California 13 February 1878.

He died on March 4, 1882 in California. His death record from Kern County, California listed his cause of death as old age, single, place of death as Kern Island near Bakersfield. The certificate listed his Nativity, in error, as Massachusetts. Co., NY, Newspapers, 1799-1880, pg. 30, gives an abstract of the newspaper
report: 'Douglas, Dr. Horace of Cambridge, NY, to Mrs. Mary J. Wells, of Cambridge, NY,
on 2 November 1854'.
